photographing a headstone

Photographing the face of a fallen headstone in Keels, Newfoundland.

Project Background

StonePics was founded to create a photographic historical record of the headstones of Newfoundland, Canada. The project began in the year 2000 in the towns of Twillingate, Campbellton and Lewisporte as a personal genealogy research project. The usefulness of the information gathered and the alarming deterioration of headstones made it clear that the project should be expanded to include all of Newfoundland. The author's experience as a software engineer combined with personal interests in photography, genealogy and traveling were a combination that made this unique project possible.

"The Cemetery Guys": The upper photo was taken in 2003 when we were in the middle of Newfoundland project. We met up again in 2023 to retake the same photo at the base of the Black Tower in Ceske Budejovice.
